ACT Research For-Hire Trucking Index: Rates Slip, Even as Volumes Improve

The latest release of ACT’s For-Hire Trucking Index, with January data, showed a sustained uptick in for-hire freight volumes and utilization, with 53.9 and 52.5 respective diffusion index readings, both down slightly from December on a seasonally adjusted basis. But amid ongoing overcapacity, the Freight Rates Index slid further, to 44.8 in January.

The latest release of ACT’s For-Hire Trucking Index, with December data, showed improvement in for-hire freight volumes and utilization, with 55.5 and 52.3 respective diffusion index readings, both up four points from November on a seasonally adjusted basis. But even as for-hire capacity contracted again, the Freight Rates Index slid to 48.7 in December.

ACT Research For-Hire Trucking Index: Utilization Shifts into Reverse in November

The latest release of ACT’s For-Hire Trucking Index, with November data, showed relatively neutral readings on for-hire freight volumes and rates, with 51.5 and 50.9 respective diffusion index readings. With a slight contraction in for-hire capacity, the supply-demand balance remained in modestly positive territory for a fifth straight month. However, the Productivity Index fell to 48.4 in November, from 53.9 in October.

The latest release of ACT’s For-Hire Trucking Index, with October data, showed a modest Volume Index, at 52.0 (SA). October’s slower growth followed a sharply stronger 59.6 in September. The Pricing Index returned to negative territory in October, at 45.8 (SA), after recovering with volumes in September, at 52.5.

The latest release of ACT’s For-Hire Trucking Index, with September data, showed an even stronger surge than July, with the Volume Index up to 59.6 (SA), from 47.6 in August. The September Pricing Index rebounded as well, if to a lesser degree, rising to 52.2 (SA), from 47.1 in August.

The latest release of ACT’s For-Hire Trucking Index, with August data, retrenched to contraction in all categories, after the large and partly anomalous improvement in July. The Volume Index pulled back to 48.0 in August, from 56.7 in July (SA). The August Pricing Index, at 47.1 (SA), also returned to negative territory, after stabilizing to 50.3 in July.

ACT Research For-Hire Trucking Index: An Anomalous Spike in July

The latest release of ACT’s For-Hire Trucking Index, with July data, showed surprising improvement and trend reversal in every category. Two statistical factors were at work – seasonality and base effects – as July is typically soft, and after such a weak June, it wasn’t as bad sequentially. Commentary from fleets was mixed, but suggested there was underlying improvement in freight volume through July. The Volume Index of 56.7 (SA) in July was 50.0 on an unadjusted basis. The July Pricing Index, at 50.3 (SA), stabilized after declines in Q2, but continued to drop on an unadjusted basis at 47.0.

ACT Research For-Hire Trucking Index: Weak Q2 Finish

The latest release of ACT’s For-Hire Trucking Index, June data, showed nearly across-the-board declines, with capacity again the lone exception. The Volume Index dropped further into negative territory, falling to 43.2 (SA) in June, from 46.7 in May. The June Pricing Index, at 43.8 (SA), recovered a good bit of last month’s sharp decline, up from 38.8 in May on a seasonally adjusted basis, the lowest in survey history.

ACT Research For-Hire Trucking Index: The News Isn’t Good; All Metrics, Except Capacity, Fell in May

The latest release of ACT’s For-Hire Trucking Index showed nearly across-the-board declines, with capacity being the lone exception. The Pricing Index fell considerably, to 38.8, in May on a seasonally adjusted basis, the lowest in survey history. from 45.4 in April. The Volume Index dropped further into negative territory, hitting 46.7 (SA), from 49.5 in April. Fleet productivity/utilization slipped to 46.0 in May on a seasonally adjusted basis, down from 49.4 in April, and capacity growth increased to 54.6, from April’s 54.3 reading.
