ACT Research: Class 8 Cyclicality Alive and Well, Including Regulatory Impacts

According to ACT’s latest release of the North American Commercial Vehicle OUTLOOK, over the past decade, the EPA shifted its focus from the tailpipe to fuel economy. On January 6, the EPA released an Advanced Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (ANPR), which promises the return of demand altering regulations that target tailpipe emissions. On top of normal cyclicality is the expectation that the CARB and EPA ANPRs will ultimately transition into [potentially expensive] demand-swinging regulations in the coming decade.

According to ACT Research’s recently released Transportation Digest, carrier profitability and by extension Class 8 demand are heading toward tougher business conditions in 2020. Succumbing to the slowing economy, forward-looking metrics in the medium duty Classes 5-7 markets were awash in a sea of red ink in October, although moderate growth persists in build expectations.

According to ACT’s latest release of the North American Commercial Vehicle OUTLOOK, expectations for the Class 8 and trailer production volumes have been trimmed for 2020, and expectations of a recovery starting in 2021 have been tempered. Additionally, current order softness and excessive inventory building in the medium duty sector contributed to forecast reductions in the next two years for that segment, as well.

ACT Research: Preliminary Classes 5-8 Order Intake Failed to Sustain in November

Preliminary November data show that Classes 5-8 net order volumes were uniformly soft. Combined NA Classes 5-8 intake fell 15% m/m and 38% y/y in November on a nominal basis. Preliminary North America Class 8 net order data show the industry booked 17,500 units in November, down 20% from October, while Classes 5-7 orders fell 8% m/m, to 15,300 units. Complete industry data for November, including final order numbers, will be published by ACT Research in mid-December.

ACT Research: NA Medium Duty Demand Slowed, while Class 8 Order Intake Improved in October

Preliminary North America Class 8 net order data show the industry booked 22,100 units in October, up 74% from September, while Classes 5-7 orders fell 12% m/m, to 16,400 units.
