ACT Research: North American Class 8 Net Orders Hit Nine-Month High in July

According to ACT Research’s (ACT) latest State of the Industry: NA Classes 5-8 Report, the US economy continued to post good numbers in July, including a 1.2% month-over-month increase in retail sales, indicating that consumers’ wallets remain open for spending. Along with an increase in industrial production and strong housing activity, demand for commercial vehicles is also on the upswing.

ACT Research: March Used Truck Metrics Flat M/M; Sales Rose YTD, While Average Price, Miles and Age Fell Longer-Term

According to the latest release of the State of the Industry: U.S. Classes 3-8 Used Trucks, published by ACT Research, used Class 8 same dealer sales volumes dropped just 1% month-over-month in March, with longer-term sales rising 5% year-over-year compared to March 2019, and 12% year-to-date. The report also indicated that used Class 8 average price, miles, and age in March were essentially unchanged compared to the previous month. Longer term, average price, miles and age all contracted year-over-year, as well as year-to-date, down respectively from the first three months of 2019 by 15%, 1%, and 7%.

March’s Classes 5-7 net orders were 14,700 units, down 36% from February and 31% from year-ago levels. Preliminary NA Class 8 net orders in February were 14,100 units, down 18% from January and 16% lower than an easy year-ago comparison. February’s Classes 5-7 net orders rose to an 11-month high 22,200 units, up 12% from January, but down 12% from a very strong year-ago comparison.
