ACT Research: US Trailer Production Pendulum Has Shifted to “Advantage Fleets”

According to this quarter’s issue of ACT Research’s Trailer Components Report, trailer industry net orders have now posted y/y declines for the last 10 months. YTD September net orders were down 54% versus 2018. Dry van and reefer net orders were both weaker than the industry average, while only medium lowbeds had a positive y/y result, but just 3% better than last year.

ACT Research: NA Medium Duty Demand Slowed, while Class 8 Order Intake Improved in October

Preliminary North America Class 8 net order data show the industry booked 22,100 units in October, up 74% from September, while Classes 5-7 orders fell 12% m/m, to 16,400 units. Note that these numbers are preliminary. Complete industry data for October, including final order numbers, will be published by ACT Research in mid-November.

ACT Research: Used Truck Sales Dropped 18% Y/Y, with Prices Decreasing and Miles and Age on the Rise

Used Class 8 same dealer sales volumes returned to a downward trajectory in September, falling 5% m/m and erasing a portion of August’s 9% improvement, according to the latest release of the State of the Industry: U.S. Classes 3-8 Used Trucks, published by ACT Research. Longer term, sales dropped 18% y/y and 19% ytd. The report also indicated used Class 8 average miles increased month-over-month, up 5%, and were unchanged year-to-date, while average age fell 3% compared to August but rose 4% on a year-to-date basis. Average price also shed 3% m/m, while growing 6% ytd.

ACT Research: U.S. Trailer Net Orders Up 73% M/M, but Down 68% Y/Y and 54% YTD

New US trailer orders of 21.6k were up 44% month-over-month, and after accounting for cancellations, net orders of 18.6k hit their third sequential increase in ten months, rising 73% from August, but down 68% compared to September of 2018. Year-to-date, however, net trailer orders are 54% below last year, according to this month’s issue of ACT Research’s State of the Industry: U.S. Trailer Report.
