ACT Research: Preliminary April Order Intake Data Shows MD Demand Holding Better Than HD

Preliminary NA Classes 5-7 net orders in April fell to 7,600 units, down 69% compared to year-ago April and 50% below the March order intake. Complete industry data for April, including final order numbers, will be published by ACT Research in mid-May.

ACT Research: March Used Truck Metrics Flat M/M; Sales Rose YTD, While Average Price, Miles and Age Fell Longer-Term

According to the latest release of the State of the Industry: U.S. Classes 3-8 Used Trucks, published by ACT Research, used Class 8 same dealer sales volumes dropped just 1% month-over-month in March, with longer-term sales rising 5% year-over-year compared to March 2019, and 12% year-to-date. The report also indicated that used Class 8 average price, miles, and age in March were essentially unchanged compared to the previous month. Longer term, average price, miles and age all contracted year-over-year, as well as year-to-date, down respectively from the first three months of 2019 by 15%, 1%, and 7%.

ACT Research For-Hire Trucking Index: Rates Slip Further, Volumes Lowest in Survey’s 10-Year History

The latest release of ACT’s For-Hire Trucking Index, with March data, showed further contraction for both volumes and freight rates, now at 42.4 and 43.2 respective diffusion index readings. Productivity, while neutral at 50.0, likely was supported by the temporary pantry-stocking phenomenon.

March net US trailer orders of 7.6k units were down 43% month-over-month and 51% below the previous year. Before accounting for cancellations, new orders of 13.2k were down 14% versus February, according to this month’s issue of ACT Research’s State of the Industry: U.S. Trailer Report.

Preliminary used Class 8 volumes (same dealer sales) contracted 8% month-over-month in 2020’s third month, according to the latest preliminary release of the State of the Industry: U.S. Classes 3-8 Used Trucks published by ACT Research. Longer-term, volumes rose 5% compared to March 2019, and grew 15% against the first three months of last year.
