ACT Research released the April installment of the ACT Freight Forecast, U.S. Rate and Volume OUTLOOK report. This monthly 56-page ACT Freight Forecast report provides three-year forecasts for volumes and contract rates for the truckload, less-than-truckload and intermodal sectors of the transportation industry.

ACT Research: Evidence of COVID-19 Apparent in Preliminary March CV Order Intake Data

Preliminary NA Class 8 net orders in March fell to 7,800 units, down 45% from February and 51% lower than an easy year-ago comparison. March’s Classes 5-7 net orders were 14,700 units, down 36% from February and 31% from year-ago levels. Complete industry data for March, including final order numbers, will be published by ACT Research in mid-April.

According to ACT Research’s (ACT) latest State of the Industry: NA Classes 5-8 Report, Class 8 inventory-to-sales ratio, seasonally adjusted, hit 3.5 months in February, while the Classes 5-7 inventory-to-sales ratio dropped from a “highest in a decade” in January to 3.0 months in February.

ACT Research: Preliminary Used Class 8 Volumes Grew, While Prices Fell M/M

Preliminary used Class 8 volumes (same dealer sales) increased 21% month-over-month in 2020’s second month, according to the latest preliminary release of the State of the Industry: U.S. Classes 3-8 Used Trucks published by ACT Research. Longer-term, volumes also rose by double-digits, up 24% year-over-year and 12% year-to-date.

Preliminary NA Class 8 net orders in February were 14,100 units, down 18% from January and 16% lower than an easy year-ago comparison. February’s Classes 5-7 net orders rose to an 11-month high 22,200 units, up 12% from January, but down 12% from a very strong year-ago comparison. Complete industry data for February, including final order numbers, will be published by ACT Research in mid-March.

ACT Research For-Hire Trucking Index: Rates Slip, Even as Volumes Improve

The latest release of ACT’s For-Hire Trucking Index, with January data, showed a sustained uptick in for-hire freight volumes and utilization, with 53.9 and 52.5 respective diffusion index readings, both down slightly from December on a seasonally adjusted basis. But amid ongoing overcapacity, the Freight Rates Index slid further, to 44.8 in January.

ACT Research: Freight-Generating Sectors Starting to Mend

According to ACT’s latest release of the North American Commercial Vehicle OUTLOOK, at 128 months, the current US economic expansion is the longest on record, surpassing the previous cycle record (1992-2001) by eight months and counting. And with solid consumer fundamentals, no obvious imbalances, and already having weathered the manufacturing downturn to date, it is harder to see a recession now than it was six months ago.

ACT Research: Used Truck Sales Close 2019 Down 15%, Despite December’s 7% Sequential Rally

According to the latest release of the State of the Industry: U.S. Classes 3-8 Used Trucks, published by ACT Research, used Class 8 same dealer sales volumes improved 7% month-over-month in December, but longer-term sales were down 3% year-over-year compared to December 2018, and full-year 2019 sales declined 15% compared to 2018. The report also indicated used Class 8 average price for 2019 decreased 7% versus the previous year, while average miles and age both increased, up 4% and 8%, respectively.
