Freight Forecast: Spot Rate Spike is Here, Contract Rate Increases Following Soon

ACT Research released the August installment of the ACT Freight Forecast, U.S. Rate and Volume OUTLOOK report. This monthly 56-page ACT Freight Forecast report provides three-year forecasts for volumes and contract rates for the truckload, less-than-truckload and intermodal sectors of the transportation industry. For the truckload spot market, the report forecasts rates for the next 12-15 months, and this month introduced a forecast for Q3’21. ACT Research: June Used Truck Metrics Show Volumes Up YTD, but Average Price, Miles and Age Down Compared to 1H’19

According to the latest release of the State of the Industry: U.S. Classes 3-8 Used Trucks, published by ACT Research, used Class 8 same dealer sales volumes were up 6% year-to-date against the first half of 2019, with average price, miles and age all below June 2019 ytd rates, down 15%, 2%, and 7%, respectively. Near term, the report also indicated that used Class 8 sales volumes rose 50% sequentially, with average price down 1% month-over-month, average miles up 1% month-over-month, and average age flat compared to May.

ACT Research For-Hire Trucking Index: Rebounds Continued in June, Following April’s “Worst Readings” In History

The latest release of ACT’s For-Hire Trucking Index, with June data, showed continued and significant improvement in the diffusion index measures tracked. June’s Volume Index rose to 70.4 in June, from 19.3 in April and 50.2 in May, with pricing and productivity at 65.2 and 69.9, respectively. Capacity remained stuck in neutral, hovering near the 50 mark.

ACT Research: Preliminary Used Class 8 Data Shows YTD Sales Flat, With Average Price, Miles and Age All Lower

Preliminary used Class 8 volumes (same dealer sales) grew 54% month-over-month in June, according to the latest preliminary release of the State of the Industry: U.S. Classes 3-8 Used Trucks published by ACT Research. Longer-term, volumes rose 6% compared to June 2019, but were flat when measured against the first six months of last year.

ACT Research: CV Forecasts Upgraded for 2020

According to ACT’s latest release of the North American Commercial Vehicle OUTLOOK, forecasts for 2020 were marked up across the board in July. The report cites the uptick as a result of the impact of nearly $6 trillion in stimulus to date, better-than-expected economic activity in June, freight rates boosted by a driver shortfall that was created by massive layoffs and extended unemployment benefits, and preliminary June metrics that were well above trend.

ACT Research: Rapid Freight Rate Improvement Contributes to Spike in June NA Class 8 Net Orders

Preliminary NA Class 8 net orders in June were 16,000 units, rising 139% from May, and up 23% from a very easy year-ago comparison. The NA Classes 5-7 market saw orders improve 77% month-over-month, despite being down 20% from the year-ago June volume. Complete industry data for June, including final order numbers, will be published by ACT Research in mid-July.

ACT Research: May Used Truck Metrics Show Volumes and Age Down M/M, Price and Miles Up

According to the latest release of the State of the Industry: U.S. Classes 3-8 Used Trucks, published by ACT Research, used Class 8 same dealer sales volumes dropped 12% month-over-month in May, with longer-term sales down 20% year-over-year compared to May 2019. Sales through ytd May are up an incremental 2%. The report also indicated that used Class 8 average price and miles rose from April’s levels, up 2% and 1%, respectively, with average age 1% lower than the previous month. Longer term, average price, miles and age all contracted year-over-year, as well as year-to-date, down respectively from the first five months of 2019 by 16%, 2%, and 6%.
