ACT Research: August Used Truck Metrics Show Volumes Remain Up YTD, with Average Price, Miles and Age Down for the Same Time Period

According to the latest release of the State of the Industry: U.S. Classes 3-8 Used Trucks, published by ACT Research, used Class 8 same dealer sales volumes were up 17% year-to-date against the first eight months of 2019, with average price, miles and age all below August 2019 ytd rates, down 15%, 1%, and 8%, respectively. Near term, the report also indicated that used Class 8 sales volumes rose, up 1% sequentially, with average price rising 5% month-over-month. Average miles and age both fell compared to July, down 1% and 3%, respectively.

According to ACT Research’s (ACT) latest State of the Industry: NA Classes 5-8 Report, the US economy is recovering from the early-year pandemic-driven shutdowns, but on a K-shaped trajectory, rather than the earlier speculated V, U, or L-like paths. What this means is that a large swath of the economy has enjoyed something approximating a V-shaped recovery, even as major economic segments remain mired on an L-shaped trajectory.

ACT Research: Preliminary Used Class 8 Data for August Shows YTD Sales Up, With Average Price, Miles and Age All Lower

Preliminary used Class 8 volumes (same dealer sales) were flat month-over-month in August, according to the latest preliminary release of the State of the Industry: U.S. Classes 3-8 Used Trucks published by ACT Research. Longer-term, volumes rose 46% compared to August 2019, and were up 21% when measured against the first eight months of last year.

ACT Research: Preliminary Data Show Orders for NA Classes 5-8 Vehicles at Eight-Month High

Preliminary NA Class 8 net orders in August were 19,500 units, down 4% from July, but up 75% from an easy year-ago comparison. The NA Classes 5-7 market saw orders at a healthy 19,400 units, up 16% month-over-month, but 2% below their year-ago August volume. Complete industry data for August, including final order numbers, will be published by ACT Research in mid-September.
