ACT Research For-Hire Trucking Index Highlights Driver Shortage

The latest release of ACT’s For-Hire Trucking Index, with August data, showed a continuing tight trucking market, with volume and rate surges ongoing and driver availability deteriorating. August’s Volume Index rose to 67.9 (SA), and productivity was at 67.8. With capacity and driver availability in contraction territory, at 48.9 and 32.0, respectively, the combination of strong demand and tight supply pushed the Pricing Index up to 66.4, a new two-year high.

ACT Research: U.S. Trailer Net Orders Post Another Significant Improvement in August

August net US trailer orders of 28,139 units were a significant improvement (up 49%) from July’s uptick and well above August 2019’s level (up 160%). Before accounting for cancellations, new orders of 29k units were up 46% versus July and 96% better year-over-year, according to this month’s issue of ACT Research’s State of the Industry: U.S. Trailer Report.

ACT Research: N.A. Commercial Vehicle Orders Healthy, Economic Recovery K-Shaped

According to ACT Research’s (ACT) latest State of the Industry: NA Classes 5-8 Report, the US economy is recovering from the early-year pandemic-driven shutdowns, but on a K-shaped trajectory, rather than the earlier speculated V, U, or L-like paths. What this means is that a large swath of the economy has enjoyed something approximating a V-shaped recovery, even as major economic segments remain mired on an L-shaped trajectory.

ACT Research: August Preliminary U.S. Trailer Net Orders Jumped Almost 50% From July

Preliminary information for August indicates that the U.S. trailer industry booked 27,500 net orders for the month, a 46% improvement from July and more than 150% better than the same month last year. Before accounting for cancellations, new orders approached the 29k mark. Both new and net orders were the best in their respective categories since last October. Final volume will be available later this month. This preliminary market estimate should be within +/- 3% of the final order tally.

ACT Research: Preliminary Data Show Orders for NA Classes 5-8 Vehicles at Eight-Month High

Preliminary NA Class 8 net orders in August were 19,500 units, down 4% from July, but up 75% from an easy year-ago comparison. The NA Classes 5-7 market saw orders at a healthy 19,400 units, up 16% month-over-month, but 2% below their year-ago August volume. Complete industry data for August, including final order numbers, will be published by ACT Research in mid-September.

ACT Research For-Hire Trucking Index Highlights Driver Shortage in July

The latest release of ACT’s For-Hire Trucking Index, with July data, showed an across-the-board downtick in the diffusion indexes after a record surge in June, although most measures remained well above the 50 neutral mark. July’s Volume Index fell six points to 64.3 (SA), while pricing and productivity were at 60.3 and 61.5, respectively. Capacity and driver availability were the two indexes in contraction territory, at 48.1 and 39.3, respectively, highlighting that driver capacity is tighter than equipment capacity.
