ACT Research: Class 8 Truck Engine Demand Trending to Smaller Displacements

According to the recently released N.A. Commercial Vehicle On-Highway Engine OUTLOOK, published by ACT Research and Rhein Associates, engines over 10L are projected to account for more than 85% of the Class 8 production between 2020 and 2024, and the trend to smaller displacement engines is expected to continue.

Tom Rhein, President of Rhein Associates commented, “Although the over 14L engine category will remain the largest segment in 2019, there is a trend to smaller displacement engines in the over 10L market segment for Class 8 trucks and tractors, with an acceleration prompted by new emission regulations expected in 2024.” Regarding Classes 5-7, Rhein said, “In this market, the current metric of interest is gasoline penetration, which continues to see share gains.”

ACT Research: Class 8 Natural Gas Truck Retail Sales Up 10% M/M, 60% Y/Y, and 43% YTD in May

US and Canadian Class 8 Natural Gas truck retail sales for the first five months of 2019 gained 43% year-to-date, according to a recent quarterly report (AFQ: Alternative Fuels Quarterly) released by ACT Research. Year-to-date sales at this point in 2018 were down 18%, following a 13% full-year increase in 2017.

Diesel is still the dominate power source and vocational truck demand is more stable than tractors demand.

ACT Research: Class 8 Natural Gas Truck Retail Sales Down 28% YTD August 2018

US and Canadian Natural Gas Class 8 truck retail sales rose 13% in 2017, but shed 28% year-to-date through August 2018, according to a recent quarterly report (Natural Gas & Alternative Fuels Quarterly) released by ACT Research. Year-to-date sales at this point in 2017 were flat year-over-year. “On a nominal basis, natural gas retail sales are down about 600 units for the first eight months of 2018 on a year-over-year basis,” said Ken Vieth, Senior Partner and GM at ACT Research. He continued, “Based on news released in the popular press, natural gas vehicle purchases continued to be dominated by refuse fleets, as well as transit and school bus operators.”

COLUMBUS, IN: US and Canadian natural gas Class 8 truck retail sales were flat through August year-to-date. “Despite the uncertainty of environmental change on the horizon, and continuing low oil prices, the future of alternative fuels led by NG/RNG is positive. The challenges of alternative fuel availability and distribution will be overcome; time is the biggest unknown.” said Ken Vieth, Senior Partner/GM at ACT Research.
