US and Canadian Class 8 Natural Gas truck retail sales for the first five months of 2019 gained 43% year-to-date, according to a recent quarterly report (AFQ: Alternative Fuels Quarterly) released by ACT Research. Year-to-date sales at this point in 2018 were down 18%, following a 13% full-year increase in 2017.

Commercial Vehicle On-Highway Engine OUTLOOK, published by ACT Research and Rhein Associates, Class 8 production is expected to continue growing in 2019, before an anticipated drop late in the year and into 2020. Diesel is still the dominate power source and vocational truck demand is more stable than tractors demand.

ACT Research: Class 8 Natural Gas Truck Retail Sales Down 28% YTD August 2018

US and Canadian Natural Gas Class 8 truck retail sales rose 13% in 2017, but shed 28% year-to-date through August 2018, according to a recent quarterly report (Natural Gas & Alternative Fuels Quarterly) released by ACT Research. Year-to-date sales at this point in 2017 were flat year-over-year. “On a nominal basis, natural gas retail sales are down about 600 units for the first eight months of 2018 on a year-over-year basis,” said Ken Vieth, Senior Partner and GM at ACT Research. He continued, “Based on news released in the popular press, natural gas vehicle purchases continued to be dominated by refuse fleets, as well as transit and school bus operators.”

The challenges of alternative fuel availability and distribution will be overcome; time is the biggest unknown.” said Ken Vieth, Senior Partner/GM at ACT Research. Natural Gas Class 8 Retail Sales Have Healthy Start to 2017, Heavy Industry Focus on Electric

COLUMBUS, IN – U.S. and Canadian natural gas heavy duty retail sales had a healthy start to 2017, boosted mostly from refuse fleets, transit, and school bus operators, according to the most recent Natural Gas & Alternative Fuels Quarterly publication released today by ACT Research. “The best January in the past three years set up the positive year-to-date February performance,” said Steve Tam, ACT’s Vice President. He continued, “Among truckers, it appears as though the majority of incremental volume came from those who currently have natural gas vehicles and are replacing units or increasing their number.”
