While less cliff-like, MD market indicators continue to support a modest correction into 2020.

ACT Research: Class 8 Regression to the Mean Coming in 2020
According to ACT Research’s recently released Transportation Digest, the Class 8 market is moving from peak activity in sales and build in 2019 to a substantial correction in 2020. Activity for the total MD market was mixed in September, with weakness in sequential comparisons, but expansion still evident in longer-term performance.

ACT Research: U.S. Trailer Net Orders Up 71% M/M, but Down 42% Y/Y and 52% YTD
New US trailer orders of 37.2k were up 72% month-over-month, and after accounting for cancellations, net orders of 31.8k hit their fourth consecutive sequential rise, increasing 71% from September, but down 42% compared to October of 2018. Year-to-date, however, net trailer orders are 52% below last year, according to this month’s issue of ACT Research’s State of the Industry: U.S. Trailer Report.

ACT Research: US Trailer Production Pendulum Has Shifted to “Advantage Fleets”
According to this quarter’s issue of ACT Research’s Trailer Components Report, trailer industry net orders have now posted y/y declines for the last 10 months. YTD September net orders were down 54% versus 2018. Dry van and reefer net orders were both weaker than the industry average, while only medium lowbeds had a positive y/y result, but just 3% better than last year.

ACT Research: U.S. Trailer Preliminary Net Orders Surge 71% M/M in October, but Were Off 42% Y/Y and Down 52% YTD
ACT’s preliminary estimate for October indicates that trailer manufacturers booked 31.9k net orders to their orderboards last month, a 71% spike from September and the second straight month of sequential growth greater than 70%. Volume was 42% below last year, but slightly above the same month in 2017. Year-to-date, net orders are off 52% from the torrid pace of 2018.
