ACT Research: April Used Truck Metrics Show Volumes, Price and Miles Down M/M, Age Up

According to the latest release of the State of the Industry: U.S. Classes 3-8 Used Trucks, published by ACT Research, used Class 8 same dealer sales volumes dropped 15% month-over-month in April, with longer-term sales dropping 7% year-over-year compared to April 2019, but holding onto an 8% year-to-date gain. The report also indicated that used Class 8 average price and miles fell from March’s levels, down 4% and 2%, respectively, with average age 2% higher than the previous month. Longer term, average price, miles and age all contracted year-over-year, as well as year-to-date, down respectively from the first four months of 2019 by 17%, 1%, and 5%.

The report noted that the extent of the shock was a near total surprise to businesses and forecasters in the month of March, but by early April, the broad outlines of the plunge in activity and the potential for a second half recovery started to emerge.

ACT Research: U.S. Trailer Net Orders Dropped 97% Sequentially in April, -99% Y/Y

April net US trailer orders of 209 units were down 97% month-over-month and 99% below the previous year. Before accounting for cancellations, new orders of 5.7k units were down 57% versus March, according to this month’s issue of ACT Research’s State of the Industry: U.S. Trailer Report.

Preliminary April net U.S. trailer orders were 250 units, an all-time monthly low for the industry. Volume was 97% down from March and 98% below the same month last year.

ACT Research: Preliminary Used Class 8 Volumes Contracted M/M and Y/Y in April, but Remained Positive YTD

Preliminary used Class 8 volumes (same dealer sales) contracted 8% month-over-month in 2020’s fourth month, according to the latest preliminary release of the State of the Industry: U.S. Classes 3-8 Used Trucks published by ACT Research. Longer-term, volumes fell 5% compared to April 2019, but remained 10% above the first four months of last year.
