ACT Research: Preliminary Data Show Orders for NA Classes 5-8 Vehicles at Eight-Month High

Preliminary NA Class 8 net orders in August were 19,500 units, down 4% from July, but up 75% from an easy year-ago comparison. The NA Classes 5-7 market saw orders at a healthy 19,400 units, up 16% month-over-month, but 2% below their year-ago August volume. Complete industry data for August, including final order numbers, will be published by ACT Research in mid-September.

ACT Research: Freight Markets Less Impacted by COVID than General Economy

In the release of its Commercial Vehicle Dealer Digest, ACT Research reported that freight markets continue to be less impacted by the pandemic than the economy at large, and that a vaccine is seen as the key to unlocking a more broad-based recovery, as the simplest human interactions will no longer have to be weighed and justified.

ACT Research For-Hire Trucking Index Highlights Driver Shortage in July

The latest release of ACT’s For-Hire Trucking Index, with July data, showed an across-the-board downtick in the diffusion indexes after a record surge in June, although most measures remained well above the 50 neutral mark. July’s Volume Index fell six points to 64.3 (SA), while pricing and productivity were at 60.3 and 61.5, respectively. Capacity and driver availability were the two indexes in contraction territory, at 48.1 and 39.3, respectively, highlighting that driver capacity is tighter than equipment capacity.

ACT Research: July Used Truck Metrics Show Volumes Up YTD, but Average Price, Miles and Age Down for the Same Time Period

According to the latest release of the State of the Industry: U.S. Classes 3-8 Used Trucks, published by ACT Research, used Class 8 same dealer sales volumes were up 13% year-to-date against the first seven months of 2019, with average price, miles and age all below July 2019 ytd rates, down 15%, 1%, and 8%, respectively. Near term, the report also indicated that used Class 8 sales volumes rose, up 15% sequentially, with average price unchanged month-over-month, and average miles and age virtually flat, down 1% each, compared to June.

ACT Research: U.S. Trailer Net Orders Post Another Significant Improvement in July

July net US trailer orders of 18,851 units were a significant improvement (up 40%) from June’s uptick and well above July 2019’s level (up 80%). Before accounting for cancellations, new orders of 20k units were up 26% versus June and 44% better year-over-year, according to this month’s issue of ACT Research’s State of the Industry: U.S. Trailer Report.

ACT Research: North American Class 8 Net Orders Hit Nine-Month High in July

According to ACT Research’s (ACT) latest State of the Industry: NA Classes 5-8 Report, the US economy continued to post good numbers in July, including a 1.2% month-over-month increase in retail sales, indicating that consumers’ wallets remain open for spending. Along with an increase in industrial production and strong housing activity, demand for commercial vehicles is also on the upswing.
