ACT Research: Evidence of COVID-19 Apparent in Preliminary March CV Order Intake Data

Preliminary NA Class 8 net orders in March fell to 7,800 units, down 45% from February and 51% lower than an easy year-ago comparison. March’s Classes 5-7 net orders were 14,700 units, down 36% from February and 31% from year-ago levels. Complete industry data for March, including final order numbers, will be published by ACT Research in mid-April.

ACT Research: COVID-19 Impacting CV Markets, but Quantifying Data Not Yet Available

According to ACT Research’s recently released Transportation Digest, key truck transportation metrics now available of January and February data, including ACT’s For-Hire Survey results, may be showing a global supply chain disruption that took place initially in China. That said, the report notes that data are not yet reflecting the COVID-19 impact on the North American commercial vehicle markets or fully showing the supply chain disruptions that have now spread around the world.

ACT Research: February Used Truck Sales Rise M/M and Y/Y

According to the latest release of the State of the Industry: U.S. Classes 3-8 Used Trucks, published by ACT Research, used Class 8 same dealer sales volumes improved 14% month-over-month in February, with longer-term sales rising 9% year-over-year compared to February 2019. The report also indicated that used Class 8 average price in February contracted 6% month-over-month, with average miles up 1% sequentially and average age down 5% compared to 2020’s opening month. Longer term, average price and age dropped 15% and 4%, respectively, while average miles were flat.

ACT Research: U.S. Trailer Net Orders Dropped 15% Sequentially in February, -45% Y/Y

February net US trailer orders of 12.7k units were down 15% month-over-month and 45% below the previous year. Before accounting for cancellations, new orders of 14.8k were down 12% versus January, according to this month’s issue of ACT Research’s State of the Industry: U.S. Trailer Report.

ACT Research: Severe Setback Expected for China’s CV Markets in Q1

According to the recent release of ACT Research’s China Commercial Vehicle OUTLOOK, China’s heavy and medium truck markets, including tractors, are expected to suffer a severe setback in Q1’20, before a small recovery in Q2. The report also explained that policies like “reducing human gathering and mobility” in response to the virus outbreak were a heavy blow to freight demand, which harmed medium and heavy duty truck demand. These same forces have dramatically reduced the medium and large bus forecast.

According to ACT Research’s (ACT) latest State of the Industry: NA Classes 5-8 Report, Class 8 inventory-to-sales ratio, seasonally adjusted, hit 3.5 months in February, while the Classes 5-7 inventory-to-sales ratio dropped from a “highest in a decade” in January to 3.0 months in February.

ACT Research: Preliminary Used Class 8 Volumes Grew, While Prices Fell M/M

Preliminary used Class 8 volumes (same dealer sales) increased 21% month-over-month in 2020’s second month, according to the latest preliminary release of the State of the Industry: U.S. Classes 3-8 Used Trucks published by ACT Research. Longer-term, volumes also rose by double-digits, up 24% year-over-year and 12% year-to-date.

ACT Research: Upcoming Emission Regulations to Benefit Smaller Engines

According to the recently released N.A. Commercial Vehicle On-Highway Engine OUTLOOK, published by ACT Research and Rhein Associates, engines over 10L accounted for 87% of Class 8 production in 2019 because of the high demand for tractors in the peak-cycle year. Demand for under 10L engines, used mostly in trucks, was softer last year. Additionally, the report noted that emission impacts in 2024 will benefit smaller/under 10L engines that are forecast to be about 16% of the market.
