ACT Research: US Trailer Production Pendulum Has Shifted to “Advantage Fleets”

According to this quarter’s issue of ACT Research’s Trailer Components Report, trailer industry net orders have now posted y/y declines for the last 10 months. YTD September net orders were down 54% versus 2018. Dry van and reefer net orders were both weaker than the industry average, while only medium lowbeds had a positive y/y result, but just 3% better than last year.

ACT Research: U.S. Trailer Preliminary Net Orders Surge 71% M/M in October, but Were Off 42% Y/Y and Down 52% YTD

ACT’s preliminary estimate for October indicates that trailer manufacturers booked 31.9k net orders to their orderboards last month, a 71% spike from September and the second straight month of sequential growth greater than 70%. Volume was 42% below last year, but slightly above the same month in 2017. Year-to-date, net orders are off 52% from the torrid pace of 2018.

With US manufacturers and farmers struggling to compete on the tilted global playing field, the key driver of growth in the mid-term outlook is the US consumer, who remains well positioned to keep the economy out of the ditch.

ACT Research: U.S. Trailer Net Orders Up 73% M/M, but Down 68% Y/Y and 54% YTD

New US trailer orders of 21.6k were up 44% month-over-month, and after accounting for cancellations, net orders of 18.6k hit their third sequential increase in ten months, rising 73% from August, but down 68% compared to September of 2018. Year-to-date, however, net trailer orders are 54% below last year, according to this month’s issue of ACT Research’s State of the Industry: U.S. Trailer Report.

ACT Research: U.S. Trailer Preliminary Net Orders Surged 75% M/M in September, but Were Off 68% Y/Y and Down 54% YTD

ACT’s preliminary estimate for September indicated that trailer manufacturers booked 18.5k net orders to their orderboards last month, a 75% surge from August’s subdued net order volume. Volume was 68% below a year ago, while year-to-date, net orders are 54% less than last year. Before accounting for cancellations, new orders were 21.4k, up 45% from August and 64% below last year. Final volume will be available later this month. This preliminary market estimate should be within +/- 3% of the final order tally.
