ACT Research: U.S. Trailer Preliminary Net Orders Surged 75% M/M in September, but Were Off 68% Y/Y and Down 54% YTD

ACT’s preliminary estimate for September indicated that trailer manufacturers booked 18.5k net orders to their orderboards last month, a 75% surge from August’s subdued net order volume. Volume was 68% below a year ago, while year-to-date, net orders are 54% less than last year. Before accounting for cancellations, new orders were 21.4k, up 45% from August and 64% below last year. Final volume will be available later this month. This preliminary market estimate should be within +/- 3% of the final order tally.

ACT Research: U.S. Trailer Net Orders Up 2% M/M, but Down 72% Y/Y and 51% YTD

New US trailer orders of 14.8k were up 7% month-over-month, and after accounting for cancellations, net orders of 10.6k hit their second sequential increase in nine months, rising 2% from July, but down 72% compared to August of 2018. Year-to-date, however, net trailer orders are 51% below last year, according to this month’s issue of ACT Research’s State of the Industry: U.S. Trailer Report.

ACT Research: Commercial Vehicle Markets Heading for a Market Correction in 2020

In the release of its Commercial Vehicle Dealer Digest, ACT Research noted that the heavy truck and trailer markets, and increasingly the medium duty market, are heading for corrections in 2020, even as the slow growth US economic outlook remains largely unchanged, aside from concerns about trade and tariffs. The key driver of the near to mid-term outlook is the US consumer, who remains well positioned to keep the economy out of the ditch, even as key freight-generating sectors of the economy take a pause.

New US trailer orders of 13.9k were up 22% month-over-month, and after accounting for cancellations, net orders of 10.3k hit their first sequential increase in nine months, rising 64% from June. Year-to-date, however, net trailer orders are 46% below last year, according to this month’s issue of ACT Research’s State of the Industry: U.S. Trailer Report.

ACT Research: While US Trailer Production Remains Robust, Indications are that Component Supply Challenges are Easing

According to this quarter’s issue of ACT Research’s Trailer Components Report, trailer industry net orders continued the year-over-year slide that begin at the end of 2018, now negative for seven consecutive months, with preliminary July data showing that trend continuing. However, the report also notes that manufacturers continue to produce trailers at near-record levels.
