ACT Research’s 64th Seminar Featured Used Truck, Class 8, and Electric Technology on Day Two

Day two of ACT Research’s semi-annual Outlook Seminar began with a concentration of industry speakers talking about emerging technology, particularly electric powertrains and the use of hydrogen fuel. John Bennett, Meritor’s Vice President and Chief Technology Officer discussed electric powertrain options for heavy-duty commercial vehicles, while Dominik Beckman, Director of Marketing & Dealer Operations from Hino Motors, gave an OEM’s perspective on emerging technology, and Jeff Seger, Cummins’ Executive Director, Fuel Cell & Battery Powertrain Integration, provided the audience with that organization’s perspective on hydrogen technology.

ACT Research: U.S. Trailer Net Orders Open 2021 Significantly Stronger Versus January 2020

January net US trailer orders of 30,680 units fell more than 30% from the previous month, but rose nearly 105% compared to January of 2020. Before accounting for cancellations, new orders of 32.1k units were down 30% versus December, but 91% better than the previous January, according to this month’s issue of ACT Research’s State of the Industry: U.S. Trailer Report.

ACT Research: Preliminary Used Class 8 Data Show Sales and Price Down as 2021 Starts, with Average Miles and Age Up

Preliminary used Class 8 volumes (same dealer sales) fell 8% month-over-month in January, but are 14% higher year-over-year compared to 2020, according to the latest preliminary release of the State of the Industry: U.S. Classes 3-8 Used Trucks published by ACT Research.

ACT Research: The 2021 Trailer Market Starts on a Solid Note as OEMs Book 29,100 Net Orders in January

Preliminary reports indicate that January net order volume of 29.1k trailers was up 94% from the same month last year. That was also down 33% from December 2020 bookings. Final January volume will be available later this month. This preliminary market estimate should be within +/- 3% of the final order tally.

ACT Research: Preliminary NA Classes 5-8 Vehicle Orders Cool at the Start of 2021

Preliminary NA Class 8 net orders in January were 42,200 units, down 17% from December, but a 146% improvement from year-ago January. NA Classes 5-7 demand, with orders at 25,300 units, slid 28% sequentially but were still up 26% compared to last January. Complete industry data for January, including final order numbers, will be published by ACT Research in mid-February.

ACT Research: Class 8 Natural Gas Truck Retail Sales Contracted 9% YTD 2020 through November

US and Canadian Class 8 Natural Gas truck retail sales for the first 11 months of 2020 dropped 9% year-to-date over 2019, as published in the quarterly report (AFQ: Alternative Fuels Quarterly) recently released by ACT Research. Additionally, it was announced in that report that ACT Research has created an upgraded, online total cost of ownership and operational calculator, which now includes the societal costs in metric tons of CO2 per year.
