ACT Research: Class 8 Cyclicality Alive and Well, Including Regulatory Impacts

Posted by Jennifer McNealy on Jan 10, 2020 5:00:00 PM

According to ACT’s latest release of the North American Commercial Vehicle OUTLOOK, over the past decade, the EPA shifted its focus from the tailpipe to fuel economy. On January 6, the EPA released an Advanced Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (ANPR), which promises the return of demand altering regulations that target tailpipe emissions. On top of normal cyclicality is the expectation that the CARB and EPA ANPRs will ultimately transition into [potentially expensive] demand-swinging regulations in the coming decade.

ACT Research: Three Components Drive ACT Research Forecast Cuts to CV Demand through 2021

Posted by Jennifer McNealy on Dec 26, 2019 9:00:00 AM

In the release of its Commercial Vehicle Dealer Digest, ACT Research noted that three factors are at work in the weak outlook for heavy commercial vehicles in the coming two years: demand, supply, and timing. While some, like the oversupply of equipment, have been on the radar for a long time, others, like the growing weakness in manufacturing and the broader economy, have come on slowly and inexorably over several months.

ACT Research: Tough Times Coming in 2020 for Class 8 Market

Posted by Jennifer McNealy on Dec 24, 2019 10:05:10 AM

According to ACT Research’s recently released Transportation Digest, carrier profitability and by extension Class 8 demand are heading toward tougher business conditions in 2020. Succumbing to the slowing economy, forward-looking metrics in the medium duty Classes 5-7 markets were awash in a sea of red ink in October, although moderate growth persists in build expectations.

ACT Research: Commercial Electric Vehicle Study 2020

Posted by Jennifer McNealy on Dec 23, 2019 9:25:01 AM

In August 2018, ACT Research released its landmark multi-client study, Commercial Vehicle Electrification: To Charge or Not To Charge, to charter subscribers. The study displaced guesswork and speculation on electric vehicles with rigorous analysis and hard metrics for sales and share.  Our work recognizes electric power as a viable competitor to internal combustion engines, and examines advances in battery technology, environmental considerations and government policy, and quantifies the potential for significant operational cost savings. While commercial electric vehicles (CEVs) currently have a small beachhead on the market, the 2018 study confirmed they would steadily gain sales volume and capture significant market share in Classes 4-8 vehicle segments by 2035, the far horizon year of the analysis.  Now, ACT Research is diving into the data once again and to update the 2018 work.

We're looking forward to working with charter subscribers, as well as adding participants for this second edition. With the continued evolution in electrification and additional players in the market over the last two years, we hope to expand the subscriber list, broadening the spectrum of participants. Our hope is a customer set fully reflective of the current and future state of commercial vehicle electrification.

A complete study prospectus can be downloaded by clicking the image to the right. To highlight, ACT's 2020 study update will include:

  • Unit Sales
  • Adoption Path
  • Batter and Power Storage Challenges
  • Fuel Cell Challenges
  • Comparative Total Cost of Ownership by Market Segment
  • Regulatory Challenges and Incentives

Complete with analysis, spreadsheets, and adoption scenarios for benefit of all customers and participants.
