ACT Research: Rapid Freight Rate Improvement Contributes to Spike in June NA Class 8 Net Orders

Preliminary NA Class 8 net orders in June were 16,000 units, rising 139% from May, and up 23% from a very easy year-ago comparison. The NA Classes 5-7 market saw orders improve 77% month-over-month, despite being down 20% from the year-ago June volume. Complete industry data for June, including final order numbers, will be published by ACT Research in mid-July.

ACT Research: COVID-19 Impact Continues, But Improvement Showing in Data

According to ACT Research’s recently released Transportation Digest, the shock waves of the COVID-19 recession continue to depress both the North American and global economies, with June marking the fourth month of what will go down in the record books as the most severe business cycle downturn since the Great Depression. The report noted that the extent of the shock was a near total surprise to businesses and forecasters in the months of March and April.

ACT Research For-Hire Trucking Index: May’s Rebounds to Neutral Territory Are Marked Improvement from April’s “Worst Readings” In History

The latest release of ACT’s For-Hire Trucking Index, with May data, showed significant improvement in all five diffusion index measures tracked. May’s Volume Index rose from 19.3 in April to 50.2, with capacity also at the neutral 50 mark, and pricing and productivity both in the mid-40 range.

ACT Research: U.S. Trailer Net Orders Record Significant Sequential Improvement in May, But 71% Lower Y/Y

May net US trailer orders of 3,107 units were a significant improvement from April, but net orders remain below May 2019’s level, down 71%. Before accounting for cancellations, new orders of 7.4k units were up 29% versus April, according to this month’s issue of ACT Research’s State of the Industry: U.S. Trailer Report.

Living up to its “steady” moniker, the NA Classes 5-7 market saw orders improve 5.3% month-over-month, despite being down 57% from the year-ago May volume.
